Birdy is a series of table, wall and floor lamps designed in 1952 by Birger Dahl. The modernist-style lamps were produced and sold by the Norwegian electricity company Sønnico (Oslo) for many years. In 1954 the table lamp, then known as S-30016, was awarded the highly esteemed Golden Medal at the Milan Triennale. In 2013 Northern Lighting decided to re-launch this design classic, taking care to preserve the original shape and highly functional features that made it such a well-loved lamp in the first place. The lamp series is available in off-white with satin nickel finish, and matt-black with brass metal finish.

First founded as Northern Lighting in 2005, the brand began as a small, Oslo-based company specialising in the design and manufacture of contemporary lamps with a distinctly Nordic look and feel. Its roster of collaborating designers comprised both well-known names and up-and-coming talents, and its products were exhibited and sold worldwide, making Northern Lighting one of Europe’s most widely admired lighting brands.

Now, the brand has expanded still further, reaching beyond lighting to encompass furniture and interior accessories that embody the values and characteristics that defined the company since its inception: simplicity, natural materiality, contemporary elegance and traditional craftsmanship. To reflect the transformation, the brand relaunched in 2017 under a new name: Northern.
